Railway Train Wheels — Forged/Rolled Steel Wheels for Rolling Stock
Railway wheels form the primary interface between rolling stock and the rail, carrying the full static and dynamic load of the vehicle while providing rolling contact, guidance through curves, and braking surface (on tread-braked applications). Manufactured to withstand continuous cyclic loading, thermal stress from braking, and wheel-rail contact fatigue over extended service life.
Construction & Material
Manufactured from forged and rolled carbon steel, heat-treated (typically through rim quenching/tempering) to achieve the hardness and toughness balance required for wear resistance without compromising fracture toughness. Wheel material grades selected according to axle load class and service duty (freight, passenger, or heavy-haul).
Design Configurations
- Monobloc (solid) wheels for standard freight and passenger applications
- Resilient/rubber-sprung wheels for reduced noise and vibration (light rail/metro applications)
- Tyred wheels (separate tyre and wheel centre) for select legacy or specialised applications
- Wheel profiles to standard (e.g. worn/new S1002, UIC, AAR) or customer-specified profile
- Compatible with standard gauge and Cape gauge (1,067 mm) applications
Key Specifications
- Wheel diameter: per customer drawing or standard reference (new and re-profiled/condemning diameters)
- Axle load rating: typically 20–25 tonnes per axle (heavy-haul variants available)
- Rim thickness and flange dimensions to specified profile standard
- Hardness range per rim quenching specification (tread and flange zones)
Testing & Quality
Ultrasonic testing (UT) of the wheel rim and web to detect internal defects, plus magnetic particle inspection (MPI) on machined surfaces. Residual stress verification and hardness testing performed on rim sections. Material certificates (mill test certificates) supplied on request.
Compliance
Manufactured to relevant SANS, AAR, UIC, or EN standards as specified at order stage, with full documentation package (dimensional reports, material certs, UT/MPI results, residual stress data) available.
Applications
Suited to freight wagons, coal and mineral hoppers, locomotives, and passenger rolling stock requiring new wheels, re-profiled wheels, or wheelset replacement components.
Lead Time & Customisation
Supplied to customer drawing, profile standard, or matched against existing fleet wheelsets for like-for-like replacement. Bulk and framework agreement pricing available — send us axle load, wheel diameter, and profile requirement for a formal quote.
